CODY – September 1st was the start of a long holiday weekend for many, but for Lander’s swimmers and divers it was a chance to compete against athletes from five other schools at Cody’s Terry Bartlett Invitational. The Lady Tigers took second at the meet, falling just short of Powell 335 to 295.
Lander took first in all three of the relay events: 200-yard medley (Katy Anderson, Emily Plaisted, Emma Jones, Josey Johnson), 200-yard freestyle (Emily Anderson, Josey Johnson, Lara Robertson, Chase Denton), and the 400-yard freestyle (Katy Anderson, Emily Anderson, Lara Robertson, Emma Jones). Scoring points in individual events at this meet meant placing in the top 12 in an event. Tiger swimmers who scored were Kurri Parker, Emily Plaisted, Cira Hampton, Arianna Applegate, Chayse Denton, Lara Robertson, Liv Ooten, Emily Hou-Carllton, Emma Jones, Katy Anderson, Sierra Selley, Josey Johnson, and Emily Anderson. In diving, Madi Clancy and Maizy Delbridge both broke into the scoring ranks this week.
Senior Arianna Applegate was a new state qualifier for Lander at this meet. Applegate swam the 100-yard backstroke in 1:13.36 to earn the right to wear the green parka and a trip to the state meet in Gillette in November.
At this meet, athletes could compete in two individual events and a maximum of two relay events. The top four finishers per team could score if they placed in the top 12 places in an individual event. Coaches must balance the long-term goals of the season of getting as many individuals qualified for state in as many events as possible with the short-term results of scoring at a particular meet. Coaches also try out different relay alignments to see what works best in the various relays and for the athletes’ recovery time between events. Even athletes who didn’t place this week, showed considerable improvement in technique. It will be continued improvement which will be so very important in creating the team depth needed later in the season.
The team is in action again this week with two home meets against strong competition. Friday, September 8, at 4 p.m. they compete against Green River and Saturday, September 9, they compete against Jackson at 11 a.m. The Lander team is led by Head Coach Erik DeClue, Diving Coach Faith Hamilton, and Assistant Coach Greg Anderson.
